I ♥ Cactus Flowers

In March and April, the cacti bloom with beautiful colors, from bold magentas to soft yellows and peaches.  How can these crusty, harsh succulents and cacti produce such amazing flowers?  The juxtaposition of the thorns to the delicate flowers amazes me.
