Native Americans found many uses for barrel cactus, but I doubt they would have used it as a playground! Here a Swiss visitor uses the many desert surfaces for the perfect Matchbox car construction site. A saguaro skeleton arm acts as an arch and a cholla skeleton balances on top. This happy young man avoided the cruel, sharp spines. My niece wasn't as lucky--she ran into a golden barrel wearing her flipflops. Fifteen years later, she still has scars.
