Quail are among my favorite birds. However, to this photographer, they are stinkers, running from me, and seemingly always located in a quail-colored background. I love watching a quail family, usually led by a male, all running along together as if they are late to tea. Pa is so posh in his rust-colored cap with protruding feather plume. And he has that cute white chin strap, like a drum major in a marching band. Ma blends into the background, happy to be dull (in color, of course.) The chicks are precocial, meaning they hit the ground running, following the mother in a covey of 12-15. This chick was in our yard last summer, and happened to be the only one that didn't hide in time to avoid my camera. Too bad Arizona doesn't have any Bobwhites!!!
