Saguaros are like snowflakes - no two are the same. FAQ- they can live over 150 years, can reach 50 feet high with 50 arms. Each arm may weigh hundreds of pounds, and the cactus up to 4,800 lbs. Saguaros are only found in the Sonora Desert, mainly in Arizona and Sonora Mexico. The accordian like pleats engorge after a rainstorm, plumping the saguaro flesh. The holes are usually made from Gila Woodpeckers, and to repair itself, the saguaro builds a callus like scar called a "boot." Birds such as woodpeckers, starlings, martins, flickers, wrens and even owls and hawks will use these for nests. Unfortunately, some saguaros are used as target practice or are too near a golf fairway. Look closely at this cactus. In the holes are those little crab apples, golf balls or paintballs?
