The bark of the Palo Verde (or green stick) is green because these beautifully-barked trees can photosynthesize, making the tree drought resistant. Little water is lost through the very small leaves. During dry times, the leaves will fall off, leaving the trunk and limbs to do all of the work. The trunks look like celadon sculptures themselves, with this tree looking a bit like a person walking on his hands.
