Built in 1928 on the corner of Marshall Way and Second Street, the Scottsdale Grammar School's first principal was Garland White, opening with 594 students in grades 1-8. In the 1950's, when Scottsdale was growing and the school district was expanding, Native American names were given to schools, so Loloma was the name for the next 30+ years. The school closed in 1981, and several business were housed there until in 1993* the Scottsdale Artists' School opened after renovations. With 120 of the nation's best art teachers teaching workshops to over 2,000 students a year, the SAS has become one of the most prestigious art schools in teaching representational art techniques to an international student population.
*Scottsdale Walking Tour website gives the date as 1983, but the historical site says 1993.
