Today is a great day to go to Old Town to visit SMoCA from 12-9 p.m. as Thursdays are free. Tonight at 7 p.m. listen to Arizona artists Melinda Bergman and Mayme Kratz talk about their work. Consider adding the museum to your Thursday night Art Walk in the Gallery district. In 1999, SMoCA was retrofit into an old theater that sat next to the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in Old Town. Will Bruder, a Phoenix architect, designed the minimalist building. The museum's mission is to engage the minds and concerns of the present through art, architecture, design and video--to challenge your expectations. Though many local artists are showcased, SMoCA has a global feel throughout its five galleries and sculpture garden. Last year, they opened the SMoCA Lounge, a community center for creativity, imagination, contemplation and fun. Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is another way to escape the heat while enjoying world class entertainment.
