Like some Scottsdalians, Saguaro underwent a face (facility) lift just as it turned 40. Thanks to bond approval in Scottsdale, the buildings were mostly demolished beginning in 2006, leaving behind the Cold War architecture that included a bomb shelter and intricate tunnel system. Saguaro was built in a floodplain, now covered in parks known as Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt. In its early years, floods were common, and even in the 2000's, we often had to walk across campus through "Saguaro Lake." The Saguaro cactus in the early photo was happy, blooming along with the neighboring jacaranda tree. I hope the transplanted Saguaro ends up as happy.
