Hiking Camelback from the East, the Cholla trail hike is less strenuous than Echo Canyon, offering stunning views, especially of the five-star Phoenician Resort.  Notice even the roof air conditioners form a pleasant geometric pattern.  Charles Keating had a grand vision for these 250 acres at the foot of Camelback Mountain and built this magnificent resort which opened in 1988, combining European elements of elegance with the casual Southwestern style.  For example, on-site is a two-acre cactus garden, and in contrast, lush gardens designed by Tongan natives.  The resort houses the historic Jokake Inn, one of the first hotels in Scottsdale, and also a $25 million art collection.  Enjoy the USGA golf course or 11 tennis courts choosing from 4 distinct surfaces, including grass.  At which of the ten quality restaurants shall you dine?  In which of the 9 pools will you swim?  Summertime, locals may be able to afford one of their summer weekend packages.  In the winter, bring a fat wallet.
