Night Blooming Cactus

Photos by Lisa E White
Our Cereus Peruvianus, or Night Blooming Cactus, is flowering.  Cereus has 34 different varieties, and 500 misidentified family members as almost all columnar cacti were originally thought to be cereus.  The blooms are spectacular, eight inches across, opening around 10 p.m. and withering in the hot morning sun.  Fragrant flowers attract bees, birds and sometimes bats.  As one of the most hardy plants, by lopping off an arm,  you can have a new, fast-growing cereus that needs very little water or care. Cactus Flowers--the original Beauty and the Beast.
