Built in 1956 just five years after Scottsdale was incorporated as a city, the Valley Ho is one of the best examples of mid-century modern architecture still standing. When it was acquired by Ramada in 1973, it was turned into a family hotel. Few people in the 70's found the architecture of the 50's and 60's worth saving, so changes were made to "update" the hotel, destroying many of the minimalist features. When it was purchased in 2002, the hotel was slated for destruction, as were so many other classic hotels from this time. Fortunately, the Lyon family of MSR Construction saw the value, and began renovations in 2004, reverting it to its former glory. Kitchell Construction, who also did the original in 1956, completed the project in December of 2005. You can sit at the bar, enjoying a martini, and truly feel like you have stepped back in time 50 years. Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner had their wedding here in 1957. Wow.
