Across the country, the Fourth of July will be celebrated by Americans as a day symbolizing freedom and independence. A popular day for naturalization, July 4th will add to our population thousands of new Americans who will be waving flags, shedding tears, and joining in the newest celebration. Last year, 694,193 immigrants became U.S. citizens. Almost 250,000 were from Asia, 217,000 from North America, 82,209 from Europe, and only 69,378 from Africa, from which our wonderful neighbor, Michael, seen here, immigrated. Citizens who choose to legally come to the US, put up with the hassles of becoming a citizen, and then go through the ceremony are so happy, and remind us all of the reasons for the holiday. Freedom is something for which I am thankful. Happy birthday, USA.
