Scottsdale was first in the nation to develop a fully-automated trash collection system. Marc Stragier designed the first "barrel snatcher" with the help of George Morrison of Western Body and Hoist, and "Godzilla" began in Phase I on August 1, 1969. Individual metal garbage cans were replaced with 80 gallon plastic cans to fit the grabber. Now in Scottsdale, we have fast, efficient service, using two 80-gallon cans, including a mauve colored recycle can, picked up twice a week. The cactus flower in a box pictured above is from the once-a-month bulk trash pick up. Cactus can be boxed, branches piled, leaves bagged, and other large discarded items can be left near the curb for pick up. We may take the service for granted, but our city streets are clean, and the collection is efficient. We also have a S.E.E.S program, Scottsdale Eyes and Ears, where the department has been trained by the police to report suspicious situations. Outstanding!!! Kids can even sign up for a ride-along.
