Sitting 1,200 feet above Camelback Road near the head of Camelback Mountain, the Camelback Castle has been a landmark of the Scottsdale/Phoenix area since the 70's when Dr. Copenhaver built the Moorish-style fortress. With five bedrooms, and 7.5 baths, this 7,900 sq. ft. home just sold this summer for $1.45 million to Robert Pazderka, maker of armored cars. The mansion has been owned by first Dr. Copenhaver, an orthodontist, who lost it in bankruptcy in 1989, and then to Jerry Mitchell of Rawhide theme parks, as well as Krazy Horse Ranch in Branson, MO and Black Canyon City. Stories are told of the lavish parties held here in the 1980's, including stories of the 20-person spa in the Great Room with a retractable roof, and the 17-foot waterfall that falls from the fireplace in the living room. The home was built from rock blasted from the site, so it blends nicely into the steep walls of the nearly vertical property. Complete with turrets, dungeons and secret passageways, Mr. Pazderka got a steal on this unique property, except that it needs about $5 million in repairs, including replacing a completely gutted kitchen.
