Charles Schwab Cup at Desert Mountain

Photos by Kelly Rausch
The Charles Schwab Cup is awarded each year to the winner of a points-based contest that is the season-ending culmination of the Champions Tour (formerly called the “Senior PGA Tour”).  Started in 2001, the Schwab Cup Championship has had its final tournament hosted at premier golf courses in Oklahoma and California, but this year it is hosted at the Nicklaus-designed Cochise Course at Desert Mountain, in Scottsdale. No wonder, given that so many golf aficionados consider Scottsdale to be the “golf mecca” of the world.  Tom Lehman, a Scottsdale resident, won the Schwab Cup Championship last year, and stands a strong chance of winning again this year, as the Championship’s first back-to-back winner, but that all depends on how well he plays today, with Bernhard Langer nipping on his heels.  The $2.5 million purse will be shared among the top five point-earners.
(Thanks to Jim Ekins and Kelly Rausch, my Desert Mountain insider.)
