Earth Wall, Living Wall

Photos by Lisa E White

The beauty of Earth Wall, Living Wall (1999) by Joan Baron is in the imperfections that come from a natural, rammed earth noise abatement wall.  Many people drive by 100th Street and Thompson Peak but never stop to take in these little details.  Joan Baron held workshops at the nearby Horizon Park Community Center where people of all ages molded ceramic hands glazed in various shades of water from green to blue.  Over 1,000 hands of Scottsdale residents (and others) flow in wavelike patterns over 2,000 feet of desert tan earthen wall.  Rammed earth walls rely on gravity making them even stronger than regular concrete walls.  This Scottsdale Public Art piece includes an 8' mandala which helps to create a calming effect for the residents at a very busy traffic corner.  Take the time some day to park at Horizon Community Center or Arabian Library and then walk to enjoy the details of each ceramic hand.  SPA - Earth Wall, Living Wall
