Man in the Maze - SRPMIC

Photos by Lisa E White
This "Man in the Maze" is the symbol for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC), showing the Maze or house of "Se-eh-ha" which helps children understand the meaning of life by showing the search for balance in physical mental and spiritual decisions in life. The middle reflecting the person's goals, and when one reaches the center, the sun god is there to greet him, and allows him to pass to the next world.  A friend of mine that works for the SRPMIC School District said, "I hope you indicate one of the great advantages of living in Scottsdale is to be living side by side with a people who have been the gracious hosts of many a traveler passing through, and ultimately the ones who sacrificed their farm land to resources being needed by the new settlers. I definitely have a different frame of reference now. Just to let you know Salt River is comprised of two very distinct tribes the O’Odham (Pima) and the Piipash (Maricopa). Since the tribes lived side by side to ward off the Apache, the Federal government assumed, at the time the reservation was created, to place them on common ground. Hence the name Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Did you know there is a beautiful little museum out here? It’s a gem, and sits near the tribal offices of Two Waters." http://www.srpmic-nsn.gov/
