Famous contemporary artist, Donald Lipski, designed
The Doors, a public art piece on the corner of Scottsdale Road and Camelback, through an inspiration by his children's toys. What would it be like to experience being inside of a kaleidoscope? Because Scottsdale now requires developers to include public art in their development, the developers of the Waterfront donated this piece as a gateway to the canal. The doors are made of Brazilian hardwood which stand 29 feet tall, but the interior is lined by polished stainless steel mirrors leading skyward to an oculus. LED lights add to the effect, which is very different from day to night. While you stand inside the doors, you are also treated to a "sound massage" by sound artist Jim Green called
Sound Passage. Clips of cadenced percussion that sounds like tap dancing, Native American flute music, Soleri bells, cat purring, or even a washing machine churning bring rhythmic music block out any traffic noise. Use your smart phone at the nearby label to listen to an audio description provided by Scottsdale Public Art (who just redid their website that has been down for seven months.)
