Feliz Cinco de Mayo!! Mexico only controlled Arizona for about 27 years (1821-1848) compared to over 300 by Spain. Fortunately the rich culture still influences Scottsdale. We love to celebrate the victory over the French!!! The French? Mexico found themselves nearly bankrupt after the Mexican American War and a Mexican Civil War, so Mexican Pres. Benito Juárez ordered all debt payments halted. Napoleon III took that opportunity to reestablish a French Empire in the Western Hemisphere. The Mexican's unlikely defeat of the French on May 5, 1862 at the Battle of Puebla has much to be celebrated. But wouldn't it make more sense to celebrate September 16th, Mexican Independence Day? Salud!!
