Scottsdale Xeriscape Garden

Behind the dog park at Chaparral Park, and just South of the architectural award winning water treatment facility (see blog of March 6th), the Scottsdale Xeriscape Garden provides a demonstration of plants that thrive in the desert climate with no additional irrigation.  The 5.5 acre park has terraced gardens, a spiral side garden, and additional landscaped areas showcasing over 7000 plants of 200 species that do well in arid conditions.  The paths are lined with interpretative displays, educating visitors on low-water use ideas and other environmental topics.  Fall is the best time to plant in the desert, as the roots can develop before the heat of the summer arrives.  Arizona State and the City of Scottsdale are trying to promote landscaping decisions that are best for the ecology of the area, preserving water, rather than trying to make the desert into the "green, green grass of home."  Scottsdale Xeriscape Garden Website
